We certainly have had our fair share of rain in Charlotte,
NC this winter. One can expect a day of sunshine followed with 2 or more days
of rain. This morning it appeared as though it was going to be another rainy
day when about noon the sun came out. When it did, it encouraged me to go out
and enjoy it while it lasted. Of course, it needs to be productive, such as a trip to Michael’s to pick up 4 more skeins of yarn.

My next stop was at Target looking for a pair of garden
boots. My garden is full of weeds and with all the rain it is quite muddy too! There I found a pair of pretty ones. Mud here I come! They are heavy duty vinyl with some leather and can be easily hosed! Aren’t I going to be quite the fashionista while working in my
garden?

But since this morning was looking like it was going to be
another day of rain and being Saturday, I grabbed my knitting needles and worked
on David’s afghan. It is so heavy that I decided to sit on my bed so I could
handle the weight of it. While knitting away I watched a couple of
documentaries on PureFlix, one was about Tim Tebow and the other about Zig
Ziglar. Both were about very upbeat, determined, and positive Christian
men. Very inspiring!

As the sun began to shine and after watching the documentaries
my mood lifted and I felt energized, thus the reason for deciding to go shop. Once
I returned home, I made a couple of dishes so I would have something quick to fix to
eat for my upcoming busy week.

Another bright star day this past week was when I received a yard of gingerbread men fabric in the mail from a friend. It was a nice surprise! Now I
need to think of something to make for her. Pinterest had a cute table runner. There were a couple of patterns of gingerbread houses too. Decisions!

I asked my youngest son what he wanted for Christmas. He wanted an afghan to go with his new navy recliner. It has been years since last picking up my knitting needles. I chose an easy pattern using bulky yarn so it would make up quickly. The yarn is so soft which is going to make this basket weave design afghan very cozy!

He received a gift bag with balls of yarn as I didn't have enough time to complete an afghan to give him at Christmas.

I am enjoying knitting after long days on the computer doing bookkeeping and accounting. January is notorious for being my busiest time of the year. Knitting helps me to relax after a day of stress.

It took me three starts to get the pattern to work. The yarn is so dark in color it was difficult to see if the pattern was forming correctly. Also, I was having trouble with the size 15 circular needles that weren't long enough. Picked up size 15 straight needles which also were too short and even more cumbersome to use. I happened to have a another set of size 15 circular needles that were longer but a bit larger than the other but smaller than size 16 needles.

As my title states not exactly a quilt but have made a bit of progress on a quilt in the works.

On my last blog post which was August 2019 I posted a picture of a block that had a mistake in it. I have since repaired the block and started another paper piece block for the quilt.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Oh no!
I found the pattern for The Tall Christmas Tree in a quilt store in Kentucky. I fell in love with it at first sight sensing that I had to have it! How unique I thought! That was three years ago.

I came home with the pattern and began shopping at Thousands of Bolts - Only One Nut. On their website they have a Designers Palette where you place fabric swatches from their inventory so you can mix and match. I played with the design palette until I found the perfect fabric for my tree.

If you google "The Tall Christmas Tree" you will find many different styles from traditional to modern. I saw one that had candles, but the tree wasn't at all traditional with your typical red and green Christmas colors.

I am celebrating the finish! the quilt has been 3 years in the making due to life interruptions.
Another celebration - my birthday. How sweet it was of my friend to take me out to dinner at Don Pedros Mexican restaurant.

Before leaving for Wilmington to spend time with my kiddos I stacked my quilts. These are not all that I have made. They are all the ones I have kept. Most of them are from block swaps and block challenges, 6 to be exact. I need a creative way to display them aside from hanging over the stair banister.

The last couple days here in Charlotte the evenings have cooled down with peaks of Fall showing up, the season where thoughts of bringing out quilts and baking begins.

At 5:34 a.m. precisely Miss Cassie, my Lhasa Apso, decided it was time for us to get up. So what do you do early on a cool morning after exceedingly hot and humid weather? You bake!

Typically, I usually make blueberry muffins but didn't have any blueberries. Using what was in the pantry and refrigerator I concocted the cinnamon walnut muffins pictured below. They are made with oatmeal flour, yogurt, honey, grounded up flax seed and chia seeds. Miss Cassie was yipping for her share. Spoiled she is! But she is pretty smart as she knows what tastes good! They were quite yummy this morning as I sat down to enjoy with a cup of Green Tea while doing my Bible Study.

Before leaving for a trip to Wilmington I had to water my gardens and flowers and pick produce. I had been watching this particular watermelon waiting and hoping that I wouldn't pick it too soon. The tendrils were dry, the bottom was white and the thump on it sounded hollow. It seemed like a good time to pick. I was motivated to pick it since I noticed a deer in my back yard for the first time ever and was concerned that she might eat it. I slid the knife into the 14.5 pound watermelon and it literally cracked open. It was perfect and so sweet! Thank goodness that I was planning a visit with my son and daughter-in-law who could help me eat it. It was eaten quickly!

The Marigolds in the garden are huge. They grew from seeds that I picked from last year's Marigold plants.

Aside from the watermelon, I have cantaloupe, zucchini, 3 types of pepper plants and 3 Beefsteak tomato plants, 6 brussel sprouts and 1 grape tomato. In pots are oregano, thyme, basil, and mint. There are 2 rosemary plants that grow year round. I started the Spring with cilantro but it went to seed.
Miss Cassie travels with me as Ty's philosophy is dogs are family which I intend to agree!! Miss Cassie came out of her hiding hole (the downstairs bathroom) as she noticed suit cases were coming down the stairs and heading toward the garage and car. She makes sure she won't be left behind by waiting out in the garage.
Ty, Mindy and I ate at Tarantelli's Ristorante Italiano in Wilmington which is close to the Boardwalk Saturday evening. The food was divine!

After dinner we took a stroll down the Boardwalk. It was popping with activity since it was the week when University of Wilmington students were moving in. Lots of music and people. Ty wanted ice cream but the line was so long that they opted to pick up some on the way home at the grocery store.

Mindy and I spent the day at the BMW/Porsche dealership where Ty is sales manager. It was so interesting watching the sales team work together and meeting the people he works with.
Sunday morning we began the day sitting in the screened in porch with the sheers floating in and out with the wonderful breeze and Miss Cassie and Cheech joining in with us. The conversation was flowing.

Then we took a ferry to Southport where we had lunch in a restaurant that over looked the Intercoastal waters. We started with claim dip and crunchy pita bread which was quite yummy.

We strolled around Southport, a small town with historical, quaint homes. We then drove to Oak Island and stopped off to walk on the beach. The Intercoastal waters are not as pretty as the ocean but still fun to walk the beach with the wind blowing, smelling the fresh air and picking up a few shells.

We drove home where Ty made us a scrumptious steak stirfry with broccoli and other veggies with cherry sauce. He served it with stir fried cauliflower rice with bits of sweet potatoes seasoned to taste. It was quite yummy. Afterwards we strolled up to the pier and around the neighborhood with Cheech, a dachshund and chihuahua mix. We definitely got our exercise on Sunday. Would you believe I slept in on Monday?

Once getting up on Monday, Ty at work and Mindy working (she works at home) when she isn't required to show up for a meeting), Miss Cassie and I walked up the pier very slowly. Cassie isn't walking as fast these days. I took a wagon with me in case she couldn't complete the trip. It was heating up and getting very humid so I carted her back to the house in the wagon while she was letting me know she wasn't quite happy about it. She did though loved sitting under the shelter part of the pier, as I did as it was so cool with the breeze blowing. It was so peaceful!

Tuesday was my birthday. Mindy surprised me with a gorgeous orchid plant. Ty, Parker and I went to the Bridge Tender Restaurant, another waterfront restaurant in Wrightsville Beach to celebrate my birthday! It was so sweet.

Parker, my grandson was quite tired since he worked all day in the hot sun. Wednesday would be his first day back at University of Wilmington.

My meal was scrumptious with blackened Mahi Mahi, with shrimp and bits of crab meat served on a potato and carrot stew made with a tomato sauce. The leftovers tasted great even the day afterwards!! Ty and I shared a piece of key lime pie which was the size of a 1/4 of a pie. It was made with whipping cream which took out the tang that so many other recipes have. It had raspberry sauce dribbled on it.

Afterwards we traveled in different parts of Wilmington that I hadn't seen before. It was a great birthday! Love my family!

Would you believe I didn't gain any weight on this trip?

If you have ventured to my blog tell me how many quilts you have at home that you made. If you are not a quilter tell me if you have ever visited Wilmington or the surrounding area and some of the highlights that you have enjoyed. And if you have never been to Wilmington and have a garden tell me how your garden grows. Or you can share your latest recipe that you have made and really enjoyed.

Daily I have been involved in a study titled "The Lord's Table - A Biblical Approach to Weight Management" authored by Mike Cleveland. I first heard about this study in 2012 by a friend who has her doctorate degree and counseling ministry. She was leading the study in another city which was too far to travel so I requested she send me a copy. In 2012 I was overweight, began the study only to be interrupted by the busyness of life.

Now fast forward to 2018 I have picked up the study again having a desire to know more about it. Ironically, my desire was peaked not due to being overweight since I am down 38 pounds having accomplished this by changing the foods I eat and exercising, but mostly since I was having some gut issues. Most likely my problem was stemmed from foods that weren't agreeing with me and stress.

Possibly I thought, and very much feeling led to go find the study that was in my bookcase, I might obtain new found knowledge, wisdom and insight as to how to resolve the physical concerns that I was experiencing.

The subject of the first chapter was surrounded around the scripture I Corinthians 10:31 - "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." Notice it doesn't speak about the foods we eat, but about honoring and glorifying God. In order to glorify God we must be wise with the amount of food we eat, and choose to eat wholesome food, food that God created that nourishes our body. Further in the study it speaks about overindulgence, and some possible reasons why we indulge. There is a balancing act of eating foods to nourish our body, but yet not to be given to gluttony. Also, if we think of eating to glorify God, wisdom then encourages us to avoid certain foods that are not healthy, that promotes disease or foods that don't agree with us.

As I mentioned above losing more weight is not my purpose for participating in the study. It is the want to find other nuggets of wisdom that I can apply in other areas of my life. In I Corinthians 10:31 it states to glorify God in all that we do. Introspectively, I have learned that I haven't allowed myself to be totally moldable by God. Isaiah 64:8 - "And yet, O Lord you are our Father, We are the clay and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand." Jeremiah 18:2-4 "This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: "Go down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him." When I apply these words to my daily walk I realize I haven't totally let loose of my own agenda, not always giving and willing to glorifying God. I have a strong heart desire to do so but many days I trip. Fortunately, God doesn't give up on us. He takes the spoiled, marred, ruined vessels that he chooses not to set aside or discard in favor of those that emerge perfectly. They were remade! God can mend cracked pots. So I strive to learn how to keep my focus on God, be thankful and trust God even when all seems upside down, stressful, hard or difficult.

Debbie Prgybgeski wrote an in depth devotional titled "Clay on the Potter's Wheel". https://www.crosswalk.com/faith/prayer/clay-on-the-potters-wheel.html

On the humorous side in an effort to keep my hands out of the bag of tortilla chips at times when I am feeling bored I am reminded of Chaucer who penned in c. 1386 in his 'Tale of Melibee' "Idle hands are the devil's tools" (Proverbs 16:27 "Idle hands are the devil's workshop.) to pick up my quilt and finish it.

After a long break I am back again. It was due to receiving an email from GoDaddy.com informing me it was time for me to renew the date on my credit card for my blog domain name. Well if I was going to pay to renew I better start blogging again. If I am going to blog again I needed to work on my quilt to have something to write about.

In December I found a couple of weeks to work on the Christmas Tree quilt, but the unexpected occurred, my husband took his flight to heaven. Life has been in upheaval for many months experiencing grieving like I have never known before. During the past 8 months there wasn't much time to sew or quilt. There were a couple of weekends where I finally completed the quilting. Yeah!!

All that is needed is the binding and a hanging sleeve. This evening I worked on the binding according to my directions, which sheepishly I have to admit it didn't go as smoothly as anticipated. But I am at least on the road of completion, heaven forbid any interruptions. And I must say I am excited and happy to know that this quilt is almost completed. Maybe this weekend I can say done!!

As you can see from the picture it is densely quilted. The back is as pretty as the front.

Happy Thanksgiving!! Hope all are enjoying your holiday? My turkey is seasoned and ready to be stuffed with cornbread stuffing. Yum!

While other preparations are done and few more to complete I thought I would take a break and show the progress on the Tall Trim Christmas tree. The branches all have been feathered stitched. Now I am quilting scrolling snow.

In the evenings I have been hand stitching ornaments while watching NetFlix - The West Wing and Longmire, both entertaining. I like keeping my hands busy. It helps keep them from wanting to pick up snack food.

The ornaments are cut from fabric that already are printed with the ornament design. Each is backed with fabric with batting inside. I have been using a back stitch to make sure the stitching is secured, especially since they are small and that there is a degree of difficulty getting them turned inside out.

Back to snow scrolling for awhile before heading back to the kitchen.

In conversation with my husband I told him I was feathering my tree. He didn't understand what I was saying. He said no it's a feather in your cap. No I am putting feathers in my tree. He gives me this look as though I have lost my mind. So I explained I am using a quilting design called feathers. I am quilting my Tall Trim Christmas tree with feathers.

So yesterday morning, and this one I got up excitedly at 5:30 a.m to add more feathers. It is now 7:03 a.m. and my sweet Cassie is yipping at my husband wanting him to share his homemade Oatmeal Pumpkin Raisin muffin. Well the peaceful morning is given away to the happy sounds of my family, though I do hear my husband telling Cassie to be quiet. He doesn't want to share his muffin.

I tend to rabbit trail in conversation so back to the feathers in the tree. This past weekend I began quilting on this ongoing tree that has been in process for a couple of years. Life events altered my days where there wasn't much time to sew or quilt. It feels so good! And I just might get this tree done in time for Christmas. If you have been following my blog you will know that is exactly what I said last year. I think I have a better chance of accomplishing the finish since things are more settled.

I noticed that quilting changes my focus from worry to creativity to restoration. That's good! Quilting also means blogging again. When opening up my blog I realized I needed to make some changes as the photos that were stored on Photobucket were no longer existent. In place of the pictures were large gray and white squares with Photobucket's name on them. Arrghhh!! Photobucket now wants to charge $399.99 per year to upload pictures and etc. on their site. I wondered if many of my quilting blogging friends experienced this as well. My remedy was creating a new page on my blog that is hidden where I can store pictures. There I can copy and paste the picture location with the html script by right clicking the picture. It was so easy!
The last time I wrote a blog message was on my birthday - August 21, 2016. Nine months have gone by. So much time that I didn't remember what my login password was to my blog.

But . . . things have changed.

It was in September 2016 that we learned that my husband had cancer. Our lives have changed significantly since that diagnosis.

The Christmas tree quilt that I was working on in August is still not finished. It is ready to be sandwiched and some added decorations. I was aiming to have it completed for Christmas 2016. Just maybe it will be finished for Christmas 2017.

As it may be I may have a more lovelier yard than a finished quilt. Stress and worries dissipate while physically working outside. It also helps to keep my weight in check.

I have lost almost 40 lbs since last summer. Most of it was intentional. I made a decision to be more healthy by tracking calories and working out at the gym. I was sitting more than 12 hours a day in front of the computer and read that exercise and moving more daily extends life.

The discipline paid off especially now that I have changed the foods I eat at a time when life became more stressful.

News of my husband's cancer spurred me on to learn how the foods we eat can stave off disease. Most of my diet is now organic plant food and whole food based, and meat is grass fed beef or range free raised chickens being fed non-GMO food products.

So this is a brief summary of what is happening in my life.

Just maybe I will get that Christmas tree done after all. The hour is growing late and I need my rest to handle what tomorrow has for me to do.

My goal for OMG - A Monthly Goal was to have completed 15 blocks of which none of the blocks are completed. Many evenings were spent paper piecing the flowers in June while watching Hart in Dixie on Netflix.

Last evening I began chain stitching the flowers together. Easily I can have the blocks completed by this weekend even though I still have today. But as the day develops business is calling me to focus on it rather finishing up the blocks.

Also, we made a trip to visit all our boys and their gals one weekend in June. Now that was much more important than sewing. Such fun we had laughing, cooking, eating, watching one grandson, Caleb, play baseball and celebrating my youngest grandson, Parker's birthday.

Paper piecing is messy! But then again so is sewing. My little waste basket needed to be emptied daily with all the little scraps and bits of paper being torn off from the backside.

When sewing up the promo block I used 1.8 stitch length. It was still difficult to tear the paper with out pulling out stitches so I reduced the stitch length to 1.5. It was much easier to tear the paper off, but the bobbin had to be rewound more frequently.

Thank you to Heidi at Red Letter Quilts for sponsoring OMG - One Monthly Goal.

I will be just in time for Christmas in July!

Tall Christmas Tree flimsy was finished with May's OMG, One Monthly Goal. You can see the Tall Christmas tree flimsy here. Now that I have a tree what is a tree without decorations? So of course I have been thinking about what sort of decorations will make a Tall Christmas Tree sing.

I did add candlesticks and flames, though not attached. I am thinking about shortening the candles a wee bit so the tree doesn't look so overwhelmed with candles as pretty as they may be. That is one part of June's goal - shorten the candlesticks.

This evening I ordered Christmas fabric for the decorations. I had to pull the trigger and buy quickly as already one of my selections sitting in the sales cart sold! I was a bit disappointed as I really wanted that particular fabric with the candy swirls. The picture to the left shows several of the fabrics purchased for fussy cut ornaments. So the second part of June's goal is to cut and sew ornaments.

I have joined in with a group of quilters participating in a Spring Block Swap. The blocks are due in November and I have already received two in the mail. I love the butterfly and the lady bug!!

The Posies Block is the one I am sewing. The picture shown here is not the fabric I am using but the colors are close. The block is going to be made up of all batik fabric.

The third part of my June OMG, One Monthly Goal is to complete 16 Posie blocks. I have 16 Posie heads completed and now in the process of chain stitching the other 16 heads.

You can see a picture of my completed Posie heads here.

I have a third goal for the month of June. I have my fingers and toes crossed hoping I will find the time!! It is to finish my design board. My little space is a combination office and quilting studio. I won't be able to use the full wall space as once planned since I needed to move my desk right against it to squeeze some stacking cubes in the other corner for office supplies.

The left side is completed. The right side needs batting wrapped on it and then needs to be hung so it reaches the ceiling. I have been layering projects on top of each other. At the moment I have documents pinned which will have to find a new place. Maybe that is what I will do once I complete this message.

Hope to see you at Red Letter Quilts where Heidi is hosting OMG, One Monthly Goal.
One of May's goals for OMG - A Monthly Goal was to complete the Tall Trim Christmas Tree flimsy and I am happy to say it is completed.

Do you like the candles and lights? They are not attached to yet. I worked all day Sunday adding a white border and making the candles. The candles were not originally planned at the beginning, therefore I accomplished more than anticipated on the tree.

There will be more decorations to come. I have fabric picked out from which ornaments will be fussy cut to hang on the tree.

The other project was to plan a block and purchase fabric enough for 16 blocks. Below is a practice run of the block.

Beginning this month only the very top of the tree was sewn together, and now the tree pattern itself is completed. A border will be added, but it will not be a contrasting border in green fabric as shown on the pattern. My border will be white on white print used in the background and the binding will have a flange of red and cream stripe with the white on white print on the outside edge.

I saw another version of this pattern made by another quilter where she added candles with flames on the tips and other decorations actually sewn on to her tree. Her version of the tree was quite stylistic and whimsical using totally non-traditional colors and fabric for her tree and decorations. It was quite adorable.

I want to add red candles with flames on my tree, but keep with the red buttons and hanging mini-mini quilt blocks for decorations. My colors will be traditional. Someone suggested that I cover buttons to add to the tree vs. plain red buttons. Great idea!

As the title of this blog message suggests "Goal Setting Does Work!" Red Letter Quilts who is sponsoring OMG - A Monthly Goal is working for me. I determine each month what I can feasibly achieve when looking at my overall business and family schedule. For the month of May I planned to complete the Tall Trim Christmas Tree flimsy and to plan the blocks for a group Spring Block Swap with a group of other quilters.

The flimsy is almost complete only needing borders. The other project that was included as a goal in May has actually been completed.

Beginning in May there was only the instructions for the Spring Swap Block. My goal was to choose the design and fabric. So I am whooping it up as that has been accomplished. Not only that I completed a promo block to make sure I liked it. And I do!

The requirement for this block swap is to use batik fabric for the background, and the overall block pattern is to be a "Snowball" where each corner is made with a 3 inch square. The center can be anything that we want that is representative of Spring. The block can be paper pieced, appliqued, or any other pieced block pattern in the center. Beads, embroidery or any other kind of embellishments can be added.

Electric Quilt came to the rescue when designing the block, actually 2 blocks as the the flower head is separate from the leaves and stem. Both are 4 inch blocks. The final swap block size is 12 inches.

I made a quilt with this particular pattern, but it was larger in size and didn't have the inside triangles creating the mini snowball block. I redesigned the Posie center to give it more of a rounded look.

Isn't this batik fabric yummy? Once I made my promo block it was time to go shopping. My schedule has been horrendous so I had to purchase fabric online as it was quite difficult to find the time to travel to a quilt or fabric store. I rather touch, feel and see the fabric to make sure the colors are true and work together in person. As you all have experienced some colors on the screen look different than what they actually are when in hand. So yes, I did the happy dance when the fabric arrived because the colors were perfect and actually more beautiful than anticipated.

I purchased my fabric from Thousands of Bolts. They make it so easy to coordinate your fabric selections using their Quilter's Toolbox. All you need to do is import fabric swatches from their website.

This is a picture of Thousands of Bolts Quilters ToolBox with my fabric swatches imported. You can resize each of the swatches somewhat. As you can see I couldn't get the green more narrow for the stems for my makeshift posies. I chose the colors on the right with one exception of the red batik is different. This tool is so helpful in choosing fabrics that work together.

So with 10 days left in the month I have made great progress. I may actually get more done than I had set for my goal. Last evening I washed all the batiks to prevent bleeding, and all have been pressed this morning. The paper pieced block patterns have been printed and cut out which were done one evening this week while watching NetFlix. I may get a block or two, or three done before the end of the month. Yippee!! Progress!

So off topic - I want to show-off the beautiful flowers I received for Mothers Day from my son, his fiancee and 3 grandsons. I so enjoyed them!

So until next time . . . keep on sewing, quilting and you might want to check out OMG, One Monthly Goal if you too want to get those projects done!. Click on Heidi's icon that is on the right side bar, the gray circle with OMG on it.

Oh yes! I am joining the party over at Crazy Mom Quilts. Hope to see you there!
Well it is because I want these projects for Christmas decorations, and if I wait until November or December my work schedule gets too hectic with little time to decorate or sew.

And what better way to finally get this Christmas tree completed by making it my "OMG A Monthly Goal" for the month of May. It was my goal to have the flimsy done last month, but didn't quite make it. I actually worked on it this past Sunday, the first of May.

The pattern is the "Tall Trim the Tree" pattern by Cindi Edgerton. The height of the tree is 76 3/4" and width is 26 3/4", a nice size tree. I picked up this pattern last September while at a quilt retreat with the idea to sew up last year. Aha, well you see how that worked out. It didn't!

Some small ornaments for the tree will jazz it up a bit. The pattern calls for red buttons to hang the ornaments. Anyone know where you can find red buttons online?

The fabric I am using is Northcott's Artisan Spirit Shimmer. I love this fabric!!

The tree uses 4 different shades of green, 1 white print, 1 white and 1 cream.

My goal for this month will be to complete the flimsy and save the sandwiching, quilting and decorating for a later time. Maybe next month.

I need to get going on with another project for a block swap that is due in November. I have only the instructions at this time. No fabric and no idea for the center block. The block is a snowball block and the center is to be a neutral batik and darker, contrasting colors in the corners. The center is to have something that is representative of spring. It can be pieced, embroidered, beaded, applique and etc.

The big goal is to decide on the fabric and what the center is going to have in it. I have an idea of what block I will be making. So excited to buy fabric for the blocks!
Karen's Quilts, Crows, Cardinals - Red Bird Co. has a great tutorial on how to make binding with a flange. For this quilt I had to make some adjustments as I didn't want quite the over lap of binding on the front as per her instructions. It simply would have covered some of my free motion quilting design. On another quilt, not having quilting so close to the edge as mine, it would be gorgeous with larger width of binding. Can't wait to try it again. Thanks Karen for such a wonderful tutorial and showing us another great way to enhance our quilts. As Karen did I used 12 wt. thread to stitch the flange down. It nicely shows off the stitching.
April 27, 2016 - An Addendum - Christmas Carpenter Star was a quilt on my list to finish in April! I met the challenge of completing the biggest project for OMG - One Monthly Goal at Red Letter Quilts.

I wrote about entering the quilt as the goal to finish - here. And here is an in between message, a progress report - here.

I also wrote about finishing the flimsy for the Christmas Tree wall hanging. I have 3 more days and it looks pretty iffy at the moment. Progress has been made where I reinforced the pattern in order to paper piece it after cutting out the pattern sections and ordered more fabric needed to complete it.

Again thank you to Heidi for hosting OMG - A Monthly Goal! Need any encouragement to finish those unfinished projects? If so join us at her linky parties. She is giving away prizes too, nice ones at that! Though that is great, the best is getting those projects completed!

Each step I made a decision as to what the quilting design would be, not planned ahead. So far I am quite pleased. I was planning on zigging every other block in the grid, but realized somewhere along the way the grid was not equal on each side. Any additional stitching would only highlighted that the grid was off center.

There are 2 layers of Warm and Soft batting which gives the star a trapunto effect. I used my hopping/darning foot to free motion quilt the feathers. This is the foot I have been using for years to free motion quilting.

In the latest issue of APQS magazine I was reading about a free motion quilting foot that fits a Janome. I had not idea that there was such a thing. And of course I went web exploring and found it on Amazon, one that would fit my low-shank Janome. So I found it, bought it and received it in 2 days! I only experimented with it but I can't wait to use it on the borders of the pictured Carpenter Star Wall Hanging. Actually I am naming it my Christmas Carpenter Star Wreath.

April is going to be a very busy month for me business wise. Therefore, I am choosing a rather small uncompleted project to finish this month. For certain I plan to complete the Carpenter Star flimsy by sandwiching it, quilting it and binding it. It was a gifted pattern while on a quilt retreat last September. Many of the attendees made up this same pattern having seen some lovely pillows completed and other blocks in a variety of different colors and fabrics. I chose Christmas fabric and decided to make a wall hanging to adorn my walls at Christmas. My version has 3 added borders to the block. Better to get it done now than wait for the busy season when stretched in December. I have some other ideas brewing on how to make it more Christmasy.

And just in case I have underestimated myself on how much is possible to complete in April I plan to complete another Christmas flimsy using Tall Trim the Tree pattern purchased at the same quilt retreat as mentioned above. Fabric in the picture below is from Thousands of Bolts. They were having a great sale on fabric. I am so excited about making this in order to have yet another quilt to decorate my walls come Christmastime.
Pictured below is another project in the works. It isn't a quilt planned to be finished this month or next month, or the month after that. The blocks are paper pieced and it takes me about one week to make 2 blocks. While in the shower the other morning I wondered how a stripe set-in-block would look in "Bird's Nest in Wyoming Valley" It looks rather Christmasy too, though not intended. Ivory shows off the blocks more and frames it bit while the stripes brightens the quilt up. The green set-in blocks with larger borders looks great too!
Once again I learned that setting a goal works! You might not think that it should take the better part of a month to complete a baby quilt.. In March I received 3 new major business projects to complete. Many mornings began at 5:30 a.m. at my computer. Actually it is now 4:55 a.m. as I write this blog to announce a completed quilt, one that was completed last evening by sewing on the name label.
Joanie's Trendy Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01392441529661534173noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1386772102605540978.post-1929784778647878672016-03-13T14:38:00.000-07:002016-03-13T14:38:18.547-07:00Quilting Projects in ProgressThank you to all who commented, helping me to make a decision on the Woodsland Baby quilt in its beginning stages. Your suggestions helped!! Since I asked about the color of cornerstones, Michele, Irina and O'Quilts said go with the orange ones. I had to agree it needed a pop color. Rather than orange cornerstones I added a 1 1/2" orange border. It definitely brightened up the quilt.

Marlene and Kathy said no sashing. I liked the quilt without the sashing, but I needed to make this quilt larger. I didn't want to make anymore blocks. The sashing did tone down the green fabric almost too much. So the orange border brighten it up, and the medium green cornerstones gave more color, while pulling in color from the blocks. Actually the orange border also pulled in color from the log cabin variation blocks as well.

Then I added another border using the same green used in the Shoo Fly block, which also brightened up the quilt. So what do you think?

I now have two sewing stations and am able to have a least 2 projects going on at the same time. Currently, I am using my large quilting table to quilt the Woodsland Baby Quilt.

In the evenings I have been paper piecing another quilt that was designed on Electric Quilt. It will have 37 blocks that will be set on-point. It takes about two evenings to complete a block and will take several months to complete all the blocks, but that is okay. It keeps my hands busy sewing rather than facebooking on my Ipad, and snacking in the evenings.

The fabric in this quilt has lived in my stash going on five years. It was intended for another quilt pattern which I don't want to make now. Do you do that purchase fabric for a particular pattern and end up using it for another quilt?

As I have mentioned above I now have two sewing stations. My husband purchased this small sewing table on Amazon and I put it together myself. The leaf on the table folds down and can be easily stored in a smaller room. It is so much easier to sew on the sewing table rather than on 2 tv trays butted up together and sitting at my recliner. We had an extra small desk chair on rollers so I didn't need to buy another. Did you notice the sewing table has castors? So much easier to move than having to push the tv trays out and holding on to the sewing machine hoping it didn't fall off.

My favorite part of the day is when I can say good night computer, eat dinner, then turn on my sewing machine in the bonus room, and watch NetFlix with my husband. What a great way to make more quilts. It feels like I more productive too!
I think I have it narrowed down as to which is my favorite variation. I called my husband into my sewing room and requested his opinion which he happily gave.
So now I am asking your opinion on which sashing, with or without sashing, what color for the cornerstones and fabric for the border?

Oh my Gosh! February went by in a hurry, and now it is time to plan the next project to enter in OMG, A Monthly Goal.

It wasn't too difficult to decide which one it would be as I need to complete a baby quilt for a gift in March. My inspiration came from a picture of the nursery already in place having a woodland theme. The couple is so excited that it is going to be a boy! They have 3 girls, precious ones at that! Father and grandfather have great plans for this newborn baby boy with visions of hiking and fishing in the woodlands.

I found this cute fabric with woodland animals which is in the color scheme of the nursery. Stroke of luck or was it divine orchestration, but anyways happy to have a focus fabric to plan the rest of the quilt. As you can see I fussy cut the animals for the center of each log cabin block. The top part of the log cabin represents trees and the sky. Isn't that too cute?

There will be another block that will be placed alternate to each of the log cabin blocks. The block is Shoo-Fly. I am still in the design process and still need to make the quilt a bit bigger, possibly sashing or more than one border. Maybe a border that is another block pattern. Wouldn't that be cute?

I actually purchased a pattern that inspired me but I ended up redesigning it using Electric Quilt. I replaced the appliqued frog with the log cabin blocks but using the same Shoo-Fly block for the alternate block as the pattern used.
